FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID WORKSHOPS 


Parents of seniors can apply for college financial aid early, beginning October 1, 2019.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now uses the previous year's tax information, 2018 tax returns for this year's seniors.  FAFSA priority deadline, March 15, 2020.

There are 2 steps to completing the FAFSA.
Step 1, create your I.D.# at www.fsaid.ed.gov   Both student and parent must create an I.D.#
Step 2, complete the FAFSA at  www.fafsa.gov  

If you have questions or need assistance with the FAFSA, financial aid representatives from KCC's Financial Aid Office can help.

You may also attend one of the FAFSA Workshops at KCC generally from October - December.

 Guidance News

JUNIORS & SENIORS:  You are encouraged to attend the 2019 College Fair at KCC from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at BBCHS.  Over 80 colleges and universities will be present to share information, answer questions, and meet with you.  

SOPHOMORES:  Sophomores may attend "Sophomore Day" at the Kankakee Area Career Center on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, from 9:00 am to 10:15 am.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in 3, 20 minute, hands-on, Career Center programs of their choice.  Interested sophomores completed a registration form at school on Tuesday, August 27.  Field trip permissions forms will go home with students the week of September 17, 2019.  Following the event this year, an OPEN HOUSE for sophomores and 1st time juniors and their parents will also be held at the Career Center from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  

JUNIORS: This year all Juniors will be taking the SAT exam on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, during school.  The Illinois State Board of Education requires all juniors to take the SAT as a college entrance exam and as a graduation requirement.

FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES: All freshmen and Sophomores will be taking the PSAT exam on April 14, 2020.  For the 2019-2020 school year, the Illinois State Board of Education will provide all public school districts with one administration per student in grades 9 & 10.  The PSAT assess the same knowledge and skills as the SAT in a way that makes sense for different grade levels to make it easier for students, parents, and educators to monitor student progress.

FRESHMEN:  Can sign up for SUMMERS DRIVERS EDUCATION COURSE now in the guidance office.  Tentative dates are May 27, 2020 through June 9, 2020 with an additional day in July 2020.  Students who sign up for summer drivers ed will receive a letter mailed home in April with dates and times for the class and the fee.   Freshmen who do not take summers drivers ed will also have the opportunity to take it in the Fall of their sophomore year as one of their course selections.

PRE-ENGINEERING AT EIU
Pre-Engineering at EIU is a program that provides the first rwo years of a four-year engineering degree. The third year a student will enter an engineering program at EIU.  Another option allows a student to transfer to UIUC or to SIUC their fourth year for a double bachelor's degree in engineering.  Engineering programs include Aeronautical, Bioengineering, Chemical, Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, Nuclear, and more.  For more info go to www.eiu.edu/~pre-eng

HORATIO ALGER SCHOLARSHIP
Up to $25,000 scholarship for college.  Must demonstrate financial need (under $55,000 adjusted gross family income), be involved in extra-curricular and community service, have a 2.0 or higher GPA and be United States Citizen.

2020 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS
For students in grades 5-12 who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer services.  Local honorees will receive certificates of achievement, state honorees will receive $1,000 and an all expense paid trip with a parent to Washington D.C., and the top 10 youth volunteers of the year will receive a $5,000 award.

ELKS MOST VALUABLE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships from $4,000 to $50,000 will be awarded based on leadership, academics, and financial need.

MOMENCE HIGH SCHOOL & TIMBERLINE BILLING SERVICE LLC TBS SCHOLARSHIP
$2,000 scholarship for a high school senior who has an IEP (Individual Education Plan) within the the last 4 years and plans to attend college.  Applications are in the guidance office.  Deadline, January 14, 2020

 

 

                                                                                                                                                                      

Seniors are encouraged to complete their college applications by November 15.  November 15 is the priority deadline for most state universities (November 1, for University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) to be considered for merit and academic scholarships based on your ACT or SAT score and high school GPA.  Below is a partial list of academic, merit, and financial need scholarships offered.

$5,000 per year.
For first generation college students whose parents did not attend college.

20% off tuition if a one of your parents graduated from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Presidential Scholarship.  Full-ride, 4-years.  Northeastern Illinois University.

SPECIAL EDUCATION MAJORS
Free tuition & fees for up to 4-years.
Illinois Special Education Teacher Tuition Waiver.

SHOUP MANUFACTURING KANKAKEE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
