November 2018

I do hope this time of the year finds you rested and in good spirits as the holiday season approaches. So much has transpired since my last newsletter and I wanted to make sure you were in the loop. This month's newsletter is slightly different from my previous newsletters. Instead of providing you with a brief educational article, I have decided to focus on the release of our annual school report card.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) released our annual School Report Card on Oct. 31. The Report Card shows how well our school is progressing on a wide range of educational goals. Momence Junior High School’s data shows there was a 46% student achievement growth in ELA and 56% student achievement growth in Math for the 2018 assessment year. This is exciting news, as this is evidence that we are making progress in helping our students achieve the college and career readiness level expected by all of our stakeholders. To view our current school report card please click on the following link: Momence Junior High School Report Card.

As part of the new support and accountability system that launched this year, ISBE has identified our school to receive targeted supports to accelerate our academic progress. We welcome this opportunity to build on the talent of our incredible teachers and staff and look forward to including parents, families, and community partners in the work ahead.

The state’s school-led IL-EMPOWER improvement process begins with a collaborative needs assessment, utilizing the IL Quality Framework and its Supporting Rubric. We will collect data and evidence comparing our current organizational and instructional practices to the seven standards and indicators that are the hallmarks of successful schools.

Here’s where we need your help!

Our school is strongest when we all work together, so we encourage you to take the 5Essentials Survey. The 5Essentials gives you an opportunity to share your thoughts about how we are doing as a school and offer suggestions for improvement. The survey will take about 20 minutes to complete. There is a great possibility that you have received the same invitation from our sister schools and while I do understand that our requests may be redundant, you will need to complete a survey for each individual school. You may access the 5Essentials Survey by clicking on the following link: http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/

Each school’s Report Card also now includes a designation, a descriptor of how well our school is meeting the needs of all students, based on 10 measures of performance, including student academic growth. Our designation is a fact, not a judgment, and represents one moment in time. Improvement begins with taking an honest and comprehensive look at where we are, so we can chart the path to where we want to go.

Our school’s designation is underperforming, which means we have access to additional funding, tools, and learning partners to power our success. We look forward to maximizing new opportunities for students and to fueling ongoing initiatives.

The four possible school designations are:

Thank you for your continued partnership to ensure every child at Momence Junior High School is thriving!
